Neuroma

A neuroma is a medical term given to the swelling of the digital nerve. A Morton’s neuroma specifically refers to the swelling of the digital nerve between the third and fourth metatarsals.

A neuroma can occur between other metatarsals and they will have their own unique names. Most commonly, a neuroma occurs between the third and fourth metatarsals. Neuromas are more common in women, with a female to-male ratio of 4:1. They tend to occur in the fifth decade of life and frequently are exacerbated by constrictive footwear.
