Neuroma

A Neuroma is a medical term given to the swelling of the digital nerve. A Morton’s neuroma specifically refers to the swelling of the digital nerve between the third and fourth metatarsals. A neuroma can occur between other metatarsals and they will have their own unique names. Most commonly, a neuroma occurs between the third and fourth metatarsals. Neuromas are more common in women, with a female­to-male ratio of 4:1. They tend to occur in the fifth decade of life and frequently are exacerbated by constrictive footwear. Symptoms typically include: Shooting pain, burning, numbness and occasionally a “clicking” sensation. Treatment will generally consist of: orthotic therapy, cortisone injection, alcohol injections and or surgery.
