Fluoroscopic Imaging

Fluoroscopy is an imaging technique that utilizes X-rays to acquire real-time moving images of the interior of an object. Its main use is in medical imaging and at Medical Foot Solutions, we take advantage of this technology to get a better look at the internal structure and  functionality of your feet. Specifically, we are looking at your bones and joints in and around the sinus tarsi. Fluoroscopy is similar to radiography, in that it can generate a single fixed image, but it can also create live moving pictures ( via a series of single still images that are put together to create a moving image) that can be stored and retrieved for further analysis.

At Medical Foot Solutions, we use fluoroscopic imaging as part of our assessment process for determining if a patient is a candidate for the HyProCure procedure. (We also use fluoroscopic imaging during the HyProCure procedure to ensure that the stent is correctly situated within the sinus tarsi.)  If you require fluoroscopy, do not be apprehensive, it is a painless process. During the procedure, you will be given a protective lead apron to wear and asked to stand on a plexiglass platform. You will be introduced to our x-ray technician, who will be operating the machine, and your chiropodist will also be present. You will be asked to move your foot into various positions so that we can evaluate the sinus tarsi and surrounding bones. The entire process takes 10-15 minutes. Once completed, your chiropodist will review the images with you and discuss what treatment options are available.

Other common uses for fluoroscopic imaging include:

  • Locating foreign bodies
  • Guiding anesthetic injections or cortisone into a joint
  • Verifying placement of the HyProCure stent
