What is a Chiropodist? Everything you need to know

If you’re experiencing foot pain, ingrown toenails, thick nails, heel pain, or diabetic foot concerns, you may have heard the term chiropodist — but what exactly does a chiropodist do?

At Medical Foot Solutions, we often hear this question from new patients. Here’s everything you need to know.

What Is a Chiropodist?

A chiropodist is a regulated healthcare professional in Ontario who specializes in assessing, diagnosing, and treating conditions of the feet.

Chiropodists are licensed and governed by the College of Chiropodists of Ontario, which ensures strict standards of education, sterilization, and patient care.

They are trained to treat a wide range of foot conditions safely and effectively — without requiring a referral in most cases.

What Conditions Does a Chiropodist Treat?

A chiropodist can help with:

  • Ingrown toenails
  • Corns and calluses
  • Thick or fungal toenails
  • Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
  • Diabetic foot care
  • Warts
  • Nail trimming for seniors
  • Custom orthotics
  • Foot pain from standing or sports

Do you need a surgical procedure?  Chiropodists are trained to remove all kinds of lumps and bumps.  We have a dedicated surgical suite to look after all your soft tissue surgical needs.

What’s the Difference Between a Chiropodist and a Podiatrist?

In Ontario, Chiropodists and Podiatrists both treat foot conditions, but there are differences.   Podiatrists are usually US trained, while Chiropodists have been trained under the British system.

Most patients who are seeking routine foot care, diabetic monitoring, nail procedures, orthotics, or soft tissue procedures will see a Chiropodist. For minor bone surgical procedures, some Podiatrists may be able to address your needs.

If you're unsure which provider you need, our clinic can guide you.  In Ontario, generally, for major bone surgery, you will need a referral to an orthopedic surgeon.

Do You Need a Referral to See a Chiropodist?

No — you do not need a referral to book an appointment with a chiropodist in Ontario.

Many extended health insurance plans cover chiropody services. We recommend checking with your provider for details.

Who Should See a Chiropodist?

You should consider booking an appointment if you:

  • Have ongoing foot pain
  • Have diabetes
  • Struggle to cut your own toenails
  • Notice thickened or discolored nails
  • Experience recurring ingrown toenails
  • Are a senior wanting preventative care
  • Are on your feet all day for work
  • Have a lump or bump that needs to be removed

Preventative care can help avoid infections, mobility issues, and chronic pain.
